Forbidden City & Jingshan Private Day Tour

Enter at the Meridian Gate, walk the central axis with a guide who knows the side halls, then climb Jingshan for the view back over 980 buildings.

The short version

The Forbidden City holds 980 surviving buildings across 72 hectares, which is more than most people can absorb alone. A guided day covers the central axis — Meridian Gate, Hall of Supreme Harmony, the imperial gardens — plus one or two side halls, and finishes on Coal Hill in Jingshan Park for the view back over the rooftops. About 7 hours.

  • Tickets are released roughly 7 days ahead and sell out — we pre-book against your passport.
  • Seven hours covers the central axis, a side hall, and Jingshan at the end.
  • Closed Mondays; the gardens and Clock Gallery are the parts people miss.
  • The exit north into Jingshan gives you the classic rooftop view.

What not to miss

  1. 08:00

    Hotel pickup

Metro or private vehicle to Tian'anmen East, depending on traffic. Your guide carries the pre-booked tickets.

  2. 08:45

    Enter at the Meridian Gate

Security and ID check, then straight through the gate where the emperors once reviewed their armies.

  3. 09:15

    The outer court

Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Central Harmony, Hall of Preserving Harmony — the ceremonial spine of the Ming and Qing state.

  4. 11:00

Side halls and the Clock Gallery

The Hall of Mental Cultivation and the clock collection, which is where the palace gets personal rather than monumental.

  5. 12:30

    Lunch near the north gate

A courtyard restaurant outside the Gate of Divine Prowess — noodles or a proper sit-down meal, your call.

  6. 14:00

    Imperial Garden, then Jingshan

Through the imperial garden and out the north gate, up Coal Hill for the view back across the sea of tiled roofs.

Pickup, timing and getting around

Pickup is at 08:00 from any hotel inside the 3rd Ring Road; outside that we add a small supplement or meet you at a metro station. Bring the passport you booked with — the palace checks ID against the ticket.

On Mondays the Forbidden City is closed. If your only free day is a Monday, we substitute the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven and a hutong walk, which is a better day than forcing it.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book?

Seven days is safe; ten is better in summer and during National Day week. Tickets are sold under a passport number, so we need that detail at booking, not on the day.

How much walking is involved?

Around 4 km inside the palace, on flat flagstones with shallow steps. There is very little shade, so a hat in summer and layers in winter matter more than fitness.

Can we do this on a Monday?

No — the palace closes Mondays except on public holidays. We offer the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and hutongs as the Monday alternative, and most guests say it is the better day.

Is the Jingshan view worth the climb?

Yes. It is a 10-minute climb on a paved path, and from the top pavilion you look straight down the central axis across the entire palace. It is the photograph people recognise.
