Hangzhou Tours & Travel Guide 2026 | West Lake, Zhejiang Province | JoyoTour

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and home to West Lake, Longjing tea villages and the Grand Canal. One hour from Shanghai by high-speed rail. Private Hangzhou tours from US$189 a day.

The short version

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, is built around West Lake — willow banks, causeways and pagodas that poets have been writing about for 1,200 years. It is one hour from Shanghai by high-speed rail, which makes it the single easiest classical-Chinese day trip or weekend.

The place itself

What Hangzhou is actually like

Marco Polo called Hangzhou the finest city in the world, and Kublai Khan's customs records suggest he was not exaggerating. At the end of the Southern Song dynasty this was a capital of more than a million people, with paved roads, a fire service and restaurants serving regional cuisines.

Modern Hangzhou kept the asset that mattered. West Lake was never built over. Its causeways, islands and hilltop pagodas still frame the same view that Song painters composed, and the surrounding hills of Zhejiang produce Longjing tea, China's most prized green.

For visitors the arithmetic is simple: one fast train hour from Shanghai, forty minutes to Xiaoshan airport on the metro, and enough good hotels that two or three nights is a comfortable base rather than a rush.

Getting there and away

Hangzhou Xiaoshan (HGH) handles direct flights across Asia and the Middle East, and metro lines connect it to downtown in about 40 minutes.

High-speed rail from Shanghai Hongqiao takes as little as 45 minutes, arriving at Hangzhou East. Trains run roughly every 20 minutes through the day.

From Zhejiang's other cities — Ningbo, Shaoxing, Wenzhou — the provincial rail network puts Hangzhou within one to two hours.

How many days do you need?

Two days is right. Day one around West Lake — causeways, boat trip, Lingyin Temple. Day two for the Longjing tea hills, the Grand Canal and Hefang Street. One day works as a Shanghai day trip if you leave early and accept skipping the temples.

Chen Jing spent seven years in corporate hospitality before she sat the guide exam, and it shows: she runs Shanghai as a schedule rather than a sightseeing list. She can move a family through the Bund, the Shanghai Museum and a 1930s apartment block before lunch without anyone feeling hurried. Shanghainese is her home language, and she will happily translate what the aunties at the market are really saying about you.

Eleven factory visits in four days, and she still found us a table at 9pm on a Friday. Quite extraordinary.

Huang Zhiqiang has picked spring tea in the hills west of West Lake for eighteen years and still buys his own leaves from two grower families he has known since 2007. He plans a Hangzhou day in cups of tea rather than in sights. He is also our most experienced guide by a wide margin: more than 300 itineraries run, and he has never once arrived late.

Eighteen years of tea and he still talks about it like the harvest was yesterday. Our best day in China.

Frequently asked questions

What province is Hangzhou in?

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province, on China's east coast south of Shanghai. Zhejiang is also the tea-growing and silk heartland, and the source of the Longjing green tea grown in the hills west of West Lake.

Is Hangzhou worth a day trip from Shanghai?

Yes. The fastest trains take 45 minutes door to platform and Hangzhou East is on the metro. Book the 07:00 departure and you are at West Lake before 09:00, with the whole day ahead of you.

How many days should I spend in Hangzhou?

Two days is comfortable: West Lake and temples on day one, tea hills and the Grand Canal on day two. A single day works but means choosing between the lake and everything else.

What is Hangzhou famous for?

West Lake, Longjing tea, silk, and being the Southern Song capital. Modern Hangzhou is also where Alibaba was founded, which explains the tech money and the restaurant scene.

When is the best time to visit Hangzhou?

Late March to early May for peach and willow blossom around the lake, and October to November for autumn colour and clear skies. July and August are hot and humid, above 35°C.
