How we travel
Responsible travel
What we do about guides' wages, animal welfare, plastic on trips, and the places that get too many visitors.
The short version
Our responsible travel policy has four commitments: guides are salaried so they never depend on shopping commission; animal venues must meet welfare standards we verify in person; single-use plastic is removed from our vehicles and welcome packs; and we route trips away from the most crowded hours in over-visited places.
- Guides are salaried. No shopping commission exists.
- We visit animal venues in person before we sell them.
- No single-use plastic bottles in our vehicles.
- We stagger visit times to spread the pressure away from peak hours.
Guides and wages
Every guide is salaried, with no commission on anything you buy.
We cover the guide's own training and licence renewal.
Local guides are hired in the region where they live, so the money stays local.
Animals
- We do not sell tickets to any venue where animals perform or are handled by visitors.
- The panda centres we use are breeding and research facilities, inspected before listing.
- The volunteer programme involves enclosure work, never physical contact with pandas.
Waste and transport
Refillable bottles and water dispensers replace single-use plastic on our vehicles.
Take the train rather than a flight for any journey under six hours.
Printed documents are digital by default.
