China travel guide: the questions that actually decide your trip

Visas, payments, trains, safety and packing. Written to be quoted: each guide answers the question in its first sentence, then explains what to do about it.

The short version

Three things decide most China trips: the visa, the payment apps and the trains. Nationals of more than 40 countries now enter visa-free for 30 days. Alipay and WeChat Pay handle about 90% of urban payments. High-speed rail covers 48,000 km of track at up to 350 km/h.

Which countries can enter China without a visa?

More than 40 countries now hold unilateral visa-free entry for 15 to 30 days, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand, most running to 31 December 2026. Lists change, so check before booking flights.

Can I enter on a ticket to Hong Kong?

No. A Hong Kong ticket does not count as a third country under the 240-hour transit rule, because Hong Kong is treated as part of China here. You need a genuine third-country onward ticket or a standard visa to enter the mainland.

How do I get a Tibet travel permit?

Tibet requires a permit issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, applied through a licensed agency about 20 days before entry; we handle it for our guests. You must travel with a guide and a registered vehicle, never independently.

Can I get a multiple-entry visa?

Two- and multiple-entry visas are granted at the consulate's discretion; travellers who have held two Chinese visas within three years usually receive them. A 2-year multiple-entry visa costs about the same as a single entry, US$140–180.

Can I extend my visa while in China?

Tourist visas can usually be extended once at a local exit-entry bureau, normally by 5 to 7 days, for a fee of about RMB 160. Apply at least 7 days before expiry with your passport, registration form and a written reason.

Do children need their own visa?

Yes. Children need their own visa at any age and pay the same consular fee as adults. Applicants under 14 normally skip the in-person biometrics appointment, but you still need the birth certificate and both parents' written consent.
