Silk Road capital day tours

One day in Xi'an: the Terracotta Army, the city wall, or Hua Shan

The eastern end of the Silk Road, and the only Chinese city where you can cycle a complete Ming city wall.

The short version

Xi'an Xianyang (XIY) runs daily international flights from Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore and Dubai, putting the capital of Shaanxi Province within reach of most of Asia. One day covers the Terracotta Army, the only complete Ming city wall in China, or a day hike up Mount Hua — two of which work well as a 24-hour stopover.

Why take a day tour from Xi'an

Xi'an was Chang'an, the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and, for several centuries, the largest city on earth. Shaanxi Province still trades on that inheritance: the Terracotta Army 40 km east, a city wall you can walk end to end, and a Muslim Quarter whose cooking is Central Asian rather than Chinese.

The city is also the practical centre of any China itinerary. High-speed rail puts Beijing 4h 30m away and Chengdu 3h away, and daily international flights land almost every morning.

For a day, choose between archaeology and altitude. The Terracotta Army and the wall are the obvious pair; Mount Hua is for people who would rather climb than look at glass cases.

  • Pit 1 is the size of an aircraft hangar; entering it from the mezzanine is the moment the trip turns.
  • The city wall is complete and 13.7 km around — cycling it at dusk is the best value hour in Xi'an.
  • The Muslim Quarter is genuinely Central Asian: cumin lamb, pomegranate juice, and bread from tandoor-style ovens.
  • Han Yang Ling, the Han-dynasty tomb, is underground and almost empty — a good substitute when Pit 1 is packed.
  • Mount Hua's plank walk is genuinely exposed; the cable cars make it doable in a day without being a mountaineer.

Getting there and away

Xianyang (XIY) is 40 minutes from the city wall by metro or road, with daily international flights across Asia.

High-speed rail from Beijing takes 4h 30m and from Chengdu 3h, both arriving at Xi'an North.

Guides meet you at the hotel; airport pickup is arranged separately. The Terracotta Army is a 45-minute drive east.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Terracotta Army take?

Three hours on site, plus 45 minutes each way from the city. That makes a half-day, which is why we usually pair it with the city wall or the Muslim Quarter rather than selling it alone.

Can I see the Terracotta Army and the city wall in one day?

Yes, and it is our most booked day. Museum in the morning when the coaches are still arriving, wall at dusk when the light is good and the cyclists thin out.

Is Mount Hua doable as a day trip?

Yes. Take the 07:00 train, cable car up the west peak, walk the ridge to the south peak, cable car or shuttle down, and you are back by 20:00. It is a long day with a lot of stair.

What is the Muslim Quarter?

A Hui neighbourhood inside the city walls, descended from Silk Road traders. Go for the lamb skewers, the persimmon cakes and the noodle shops on Beiyuanmen — and go hungry.

Is Xi'an worth a stopover?

If you have 10+ hours and qualify for visa-free transit, yes. The museum and the wall fit inside one day, and both airports are close enough to make the logistics easy.
