The capital of Sichuan, where the pandas are 30 minutes away and the afternoon belongs to teahouses.
The short version
Chengdu does leisure better than any city in China. Sichuan's capital has 2,000 years of practice: teahouses that open before breakfast, mahjong played in public parks, and a cuisine that treats chilli and numbing pepper as a structural element rather than a seasoning.
The pandas are the reason most people come, and they are worth the trip — the base opens at 07:30, the animals are active for about two hours, and everything after that is adults sleeping in bamboo.
Beyond them, Chengdu is the practical base for Sichuan: Leshan's 71-metre Buddha two hours south, the Tibetan plateau a flight away, and hotpot available at any hour of the night.

High-speed rail puts Xi'an 3h away and Chongqing 1h 30m away, both useful if Chengdu is one stop of several.
Guides meet guests at the hotel. The panda base has no metro stop, so transport is part of every tour we run there.
At opening, 07:30. The pandas feed in the cool of the morning and sleep through the heat of the day. We pick you up at 07:00 and you are inside before the first coach groups.
Technically yes, practically no. Both need about four hours plus travel, and you would spend the day in a vehicle. Pick one, or stay two nights and do both properly.
Spicy, but the numbing Sichuan pepper is the part that surprises people — it is a tingling, anaesthetic sensation rather than heat. Say 'wei la' (mild) and kitchens will dial it back without losing the flavour.
Yes. There are daily flights to Lhasa and it is one of the easiest places to arrange a Tibet Travel Permit, which must be booked through an agency before you fly.
They usually are after 10:00, which is why we go early. If the weather is genuinely bad — pandas dislike heat above 26°C — we switch the afternoon to the Sichuan Museum or a teahouse day and refund the panda portion.
