Chengdu Teahouses & Old Town Day Tour

A morning in People's Park with the retired crowd, sichuan opera at lunch, and an evening of hotpot — the city's own version of a good day.

The short version

Chengdu's reputation for leisure is not marketing — it is what people here do with a day off. This tour leans into it: morning tea in People's Park with the retired crowd, the Wide and Narrow Alleys, a Sichuan opera show with the face-changing act at lunch, and hotpot in the evening. About 7 hours, and nobody hurries.

  • People's Park at 09:00 is a full census of Chengdu leisure: mahjong, ear-cleaning, tea.
  • Sichuan opera's face-changing act is worth the hour; book it in advance.
  • Hotpot in Chengdu is the version the rest of the country copies.
  • Small group, maximum 8, because teahouses do not seat twelve.

What not to miss

  1. 09:00

    Hotel pickup

Metro to People's Park. Early enough to get a bamboo chair before the regulars take them all.

  2. 09:40

    Tea at Heming

A pot of green tea in the park's oldest teahouse, with mahjong on one side and the ear-cleaners working the rows with their tuning forks.

  3. 11:00

    Wide and Narrow Alleys

Two Qing-dynasty lanes rebuilt into courtyards and shops. The rebuilt part is the facade; the courtyards behind it are the interesting half.

  4. 12:30

    Sichuan opera lunch

Face-changing, fire-spitting and a hand-shadow act over a Sichuan lunch. The opera house seats are close and the show is genuinely good.

  5. 14:30

    Jinli and the temple

The old street beside Wuhou Shrine, then into the shrine's gardens, which are quieter than the lane.

  6. 18:00

    Hotpot dinner, then back

A proper Chengdu hotpot: a divided pot, sesame oil dip, and the numbing pepper that makes Sichuan cooking what it is. Your guide walks you back or puts you in a taxi, around 20:00.

Pickup, timing and getting around

Pickup at 09:00 from hotels in Chengdu's central districts; elsewhere we meet at a station on metro Line 1 or 2. Wear something you do not mind smelling of hotpot afterwards.

Tell us at booking if anyone cannot eat chilli. We can order a divided pot with a mild side, and the rest of the day is unaffected — the opera show and the teahouses have no such problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sichuan opera show touristy?

It is performed for visitors, yes, but face-changing is a genuine regional art and the performers are professionals. An hour is the right length; anything longer and it drags.

How spicy is the hotpot?

Properly spicy, but ask for a divided pot — yuanyang — and you get a mild broth on one side. The sesame oil dip is not optional: it cools and coats, and locals would not eat without it.

What is the ear-cleaning in the park?

A traditional Sichuan craft: the cleaner works a set of tuning forks and feathered probes while making a ringing sound. It is about ten minutes and roughly ¥60. Entirely optional and surprisingly pleasant.

Can we do this on a Monday?

Yes. The only thing in Chengdu with a Monday closure worth worrying about is the Sichuan Museum, which we do not include. Everything on this route runs seven days.
