Shanghai Museum & West Bund Art Day Tour

Bronzes and ceramics in the morning, a noodle lunch, then the riverside galleries of West Bund — China's best general museum plus the country's liveliest art district.

The short version

The Shanghai Museum is the country's best single-volume introduction to Chinese art — bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy and paintings laid out by dynasty with real logic. Pair it with an afternoon in the West Bund galleries, a former industrial riverside turned into museums, and you have the intellectual Shanghai day in about seven hours.

  • The Shanghai Museum covers 5,000 years in four floors; you need a guide to make it cohere.
  • Closed Mondays — book Tuesday to Sunday.
  • West Bund is a 10-minute taxi from the museum and free to enter.
  • Small group, capped at 8, so gallery conversation actually works.

What not to miss

  1. 09:00

    Hotel pickup

Metro to People's Square. Your guide carries a plan for the four floors, not a floor-by-floor trawl.

  2. 09:40

    Bronzes gallery

Shang and Zhou ritual vessels — the collection that makes the museum's reputation, and the one most worth slowing down for.

  3. 11:00

    Ceramics and calligraphy

From Han tomb pottery to Song celadon and Ming blue-and-white, then the calligraphy rooms where the brushwork is the argument.

  4. 12:30

    Noodle lunch

A shop ten minutes from the museum: hand-pulled noodles, a cold plate of smashed cucumber, and pickled mustard greens.

  5. 14:00

    West Bund galleries

The former coal terminal and aircraft hangar turned into museums, then the riverside walk south past the public art.

  6. 16:00

    One major exhibition, then back

A converted aviation fuel tank or a private collection of contemporary Chinese work — your guide picks what is on. Metro back with your guide, or a taxi if your feet have had enough, arriving around 18:00.

Pickup, timing and getting around

Pickup at 09:00 from hotels inside the Inner Ring Road; elsewhere we meet at People's Square station, exit 1. Bring your passport — the museum reservation is made against an ID number.

This is the day we recommend when it rains, and the day we recommend to anyone who has done the Bund already. If it is your only day in Shanghai, take the Bund tour instead and add one museum gallery to it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Shanghai Museum free?

Entry is free but reservations are required and released a few days ahead, under an ID number. We make the reservation for you and you bring the passport you booked with.

How long should we spend inside?

Three hours. Less and you skim; more and the dynastic sequence blurs. Your guide chooses roughly eight objects to stop at properly and walks you past the rest.

What is West Bund?

A 1.5 km stretch of former industrial riverfront on the Huangpu, rebuilt into museums, galleries and a public promenade. It is free to walk and it is where Shanghai's contemporary art scene actually sits.

Can I do this on a Monday?

No — the Shanghai Museum closes Mondays. On a Monday we substitute the Power Station of Art, the Yuz Museum and a walk in the former French Concession, which covers similar ground.
