Zhangjiajie & Avatar Mountains
The sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains of Avatar, plus the glass elevator, Tianzi Mountain and the longest cableway in Asia.
The short version
This 7-day tour covers Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in Hunan Province, including the sandstone pillars known as Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, Tianzi Mountain, the Bailong glass elevator and Tianmen Mountain's natural arch. Private guiding throughout, from US$1,190 per person.
- Four days inside Wulingyuan — the park is far bigger than one day allows.
- Timed entry so you photograph the pillars before the day crowds arrive.
- Tianmen Mountain's 99-bend road and glass skywalk included.
- Zhangjiajie now has direct rail from most major cities.

Frequently asked questions
Is Zhangjiajie crowded?
Very, in July, August and during Chinese holidays. We enter at opening and route you against the usual circuit, which makes an enormous difference.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate. The Golden Whip Stream day is flat; Yuanjiajie and Tianzi involve long stairways, though cable cars and elevators cut most of the climbing.
What is the weather like?
Humid and changeable year round. Visibility after rain is when the pillars appear to float in cloud — photographically the best conditions, surprisingly.
Can I combine Zhangjiajie with Guilin?
Yes, and it is a popular pairing. The rail connection via Changsha takes about five hours.
