The karst capital of Guangxi, where the landscape is the attraction and the river is the road.
The short version
Guilin's scenery has been the Chinese idea of landscape for roughly 1,200 years, which is a burden as much as an asset. The limestone towers along the Li River in Guangxi were painted long before anyone photographed them, and the risk is that they arrive as a cliché and leave as a disappointment.
They do not, if you get the timing right. Mist in the morning lifts off the river; the light in the late afternoon turns the towers into silhouettes; and the flat grey of an overcast noon does the scenery no favours at all.
The practical point is that Guangxi is best seen slowly. One day means one thing: the river, the fields around Yangshuo, or the terraces. Two days lets you combine two without spending the whole trip in a vehicle.

Yes, and it is not interchangeable with driving to Yangshuo. The four-hour downstream run passes the tower clusters that give Guangxi its reputation, and the boat is the only place you can see them at the right angle.
Yes — cruise down in the morning, cycle the Yangshuo back roads in the afternoon, and drive back to Guilin after dinner. It is a full day, roughly ten hours, and it works.
About 2h 30m north-west of Guilin, which makes a long day — eleven hours door to door. Best in May when the paddies are flooded and mirror the sky, and late September when the rice turns gold.
Light rain and mist are good for karst scenery; heavy rain cancels the cruise and floods the cycling routes. We move to Reed Flute Cave and the Elephant Trunk Hill area, or reschedule.
