Chongqing Tours & Private City Tours 2026 | Hongya Cave, Ciqikou, Yangtze Cableway | JoyoTour

Chongqing is China's mountain city: cliff-side stilt houses, a Yangtze cableway, hotpot everywhere and a night skyline to rival Hong Kong. Two to three days cover the core.

The short version

Chongqing deserves 2 to 3 full days. The city core — Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, Chaotianmen and the Ciqikou old town — is dense, walkable in parts and largely free: Hongya Cave and Ciqikou cost nothing to enter, the Yangtze Cableway is ¥5 a ride with cash or ¥1.8 on a transit card, and Nanshan's One Tree viewpoint charges ¥20 for the skyline everyone comes for. Budget about ¥1,500–2,500 (US$210–350) for a week including food and hotels, and come in spring or winter rather than the summer, when it climbs past 40°C (104°F). Remember, too, that the city is built vertically — a metro map will not tell you that two stops apart can mean 100 m (330 ft) of climb.

What Chongqing is actually like

Chongqing is the city that breaks your mental map. Built across steep hills where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, it stacks roads, metro lines and buildings in layers, so a flat map is close to useless and two points that look adjacent can be separated by a cliff, a river or 20 storeys of vertical street. Locals call it Shancheng — Mountain City — and they are not being poetic.

It is also known as the Fog Capital, for the river mist that softens the skyline, and as one of China's three 'furnaces', for summers that push past 40°C. Both nicknames matter to your planning: the fog lifts in the evening, which is exactly when Chongqing becomes extraordinary, and the heat is genuinely punishing from June to August.

What most visitors come for is the night. From Nanshan's One Tree viewpoint or a boat on the two rivers, the whole hillside turns into a wall of light, layered and tilted and reflected in the water. The old saying goes: see no night view, and you have not been to Chongqing. Add hotpot, a 300-year-old tea house culture, and a wartime capital's worth of modern Chinese history, and you have a city that rewards a slower look.

What not to miss — Chongqing

01

Hongya Cave (洪崖洞)

An 11-storey stack of Bayu-style stilt houses built into the cliff face on the Jialing River, its wooden galleries glowing gold after dark. Free to enter, with an observation deck open top and bottom to the street; the fourth floor is a snack street and the upper floors hold bars and coffee shops. Take the lift or stairs between levels, or walk through the waterfall.

02

Nanshan One Tree viewpoint (南山一棵树)

The single best place to see the skyline: a terrace on the south bank looking straight back at the peninsula, where the lights of the two rivers and the stacked towers fan out below you. ¥20, with the Qiangwei Garden at ¥10 and Meigui Garden at ¥5 in the same park; bring a tripod for the long exposures.

03

Yangtze River Cableway (长江索道)

A cable car strung across the Yangtze from Yuzhong to Nan'an, once a commuter route and now the city's most photogenic ride — the river, the bridges and the tilted buildings slide past under your feet. Runs roughly 06:15–21:45; ¥5 by cash ticket or ¥1.8 with a transit IC card. It has appeared in films from 'Crazy Stone' to 'Zhou Yu's Train'.

04

Ciqikou Ancient Town (磁器口)

The only well-preserved old town inside the main city, on the Jialing River 14 km (9 mi) west, with 'one river, two streams, three hills and four streets'. Stone lanes, tea houses where you can sit an entire afternoon, and the famous chen mahua dough shops. Free to enter; bus 220 or a taxi from Shapingba, about 3 km.

05

Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻)

Tang- and Song-dynasty Buddhist cliff carvings, concentrated at Baodingshan, ranked with Dunhuang, Yungang and Longmen — 'Dunhuang in the north, Dazu in the south'. Enormous in scale and startlingly detailed. Peak combo ticket ¥180, low season ¥130, open 08:30–18:00; buses from Caiyuanba take about 90 minutes.

06

Jiefangbei & Chaotianmen (解放碑 / 朝天门)

Jiefangbei is the monument at the heart of the city's oldest and busiest shopping district — the place locals go to see and be seen. Ten minutes' walk downhill, Chaotianmen is the spit where the Jialing's green water meets the Yangtze's yellow, with sweeping views of all three banks and evening ferries up the harbour.

Getting there and away

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) sits 21 km northeast of the city in Yubei district and handles almost all air traffic into the municipality. The airport bus costs ¥15 and takes about 35 minutes, running from the airport to Shangqingsi and back roughly every 30 minutes between 06:00 and 21:00; Metro Line 3 connects the terminal directly to Jiefangbei, Jiangbei and Nan'an, which is usually the faster option in traffic. A taxi to the centre takes 60–80 minutes and is cheap by big-city standards. High-speed rail from Chengdu now runs in about 1.5 hours, and the two main train stations are Chongqing Station (Caiyuanba) in Yuzhong and Chongqing North (Longtousi) in Yubei. Long-distance buses leave from Caiyuanba, Nanping, Longtousi, Shapingba, Chenjiaping and Sigongli hubs; tickets can be pre-booked two days ahead. For the classic river route, cruise ships from Yichang through the Three Gorges arrive at Chaotianmen.

Inside the city, the metro is the answer to almost everything: lines run through forest, along the rivers and straight through apartment blocks, and all transfers are inside the paid area. Line 1 runs from Chaotianmen west to the university town, Line 2 (the original line, 19.15 km) hugs the Jialing River, and Line 3 links the airport to the centre and is the busiest of the lot — avoid it at rush hour. Fares start at ¥2. Buses are the mainstay for locals and cost ¥1 (ordinary) or ¥2 (air-conditioned), running roughly 05:30–22:00. Taxis are a bargain: yellow Tianyu cabs flag at ¥8 for the first 3 km then ¥1.8 per km, white Mondeos at ¥7 then ¥2.4, with a 20% night surcharge — but drivers may refuse fares when queuing for gas. The Yangtze Cableway (¥5 cash, ¥1.8 on a transit card, 06:15–21:45) and the remaining ferries from Chaotianmen are the two transport experiences worth deliberately taking. Note that many streets are one-way, so the stop you got off at may not be the stop you return from.

How many days do you need?

Two days is enough for the city core if you move efficiently; three is comfortable and lets you add Nanshan properly. Day one: Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, Chaotianmen and an evening river boat or the cableway. Day two: Ciqikou in the morning, the Yangtze Cableway and Three Gorges Museum in the afternoon, Nanshan One Tree after dark. A third day buys the Dazu Rock Carvings as a full-day trip west, or the wartime-capital sites around Geleshan — the martyrs' cemetery, Baigongguan and Zhazidong, all free but spread across a hill. Add a fourth day only if you are continuing down the Yangtze on a Three Gorges cruise, which is its own 3-day journey to Yichang.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Chongqing?

Spring and winter. March is green and mild, winter rarely drops below freezing and is the season for the city's famous hot springs. Summer is brutal — over 40°C at the peak, one of China's three 'furnaces' — and autumn brings frequent night rain, the 'Ba mountains night rain' of classical poetry. If you do come in summer, the fog is thinnest at night, which is the best time to see the skyline anyway.

Is Chongqing worth visiting for the food alone?

Yes, and hotpot is the reason. Chongqing hotpot is a divided pot of bubbling red broth with beef tallow, Sichuan pepper and chilli, into which you drop tripe, blood curd, luncheon meat and vegetables, then dip in sesame oil, oyster sauce and garlic — never sesame paste. The city is also famous for suanlafen sweet-potato noodles, Chongqing xiaomian noodles, shuizhuyu fish in chilli oil, maoxuewang and Nanshan spring-water chicken. Snacks are cheap: most street food is under ¥10.

How do I get around a city built on hills?

Metro first — it is fast, cheap (from ¥2) and avoids the traffic and the one-way street trap. Line 2 along the Jialing River and Line 3 into the airport are the most scenic and useful. Buses fill the gaps at ¥1–2. Taxis are cheap enough that most visitors use them freely, though drivers sometimes refuse fares when they need to queue for gas. For the two classic rides, take the Yangtze Cableway (¥5) and a Chaotianmen ferry.

Can I visit Chongqing if I cannot eat spicy food?

Easily. Almost every hotpot restaurant offers a yuanyang pot — one half red and numbing, one half clear broth — so you can eat at the same table as your chilli-loving friends. Order tomato fish instead of shuizhuyu, ask for 'bu la' (not spicy) and expect it to be respected in most restaurants. Bring stomach medicine if you are sensitive; the local diet is heavy on chilli and Sichuan pepper, and the humidity means many locals eat it partly to cut damp.

Is Chongqing safe?

Yes — as a newer municipality it ranks well nationally for public order, and patrol police are visible in the centre. Locals are famously direct and helpful. The usual big-city cautions apply: watch your wallet and phone in crowded places like Jiefangbei and Ciqikou, and do not follow anyone who approaches you on the street with an offer.

How do I get to the Three Gorges from Chongqing?

Boats leave from Chaotianmen on the peninsula; the classic downstream route to Yichang takes three days and passes Baidicheng, Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, the Lesser Three Gorges and the Three Gorges Dam. Domestic boats run ¥450–1,300 depending on cabin class and foreign-tourist cruise ships ¥1,200–5,000 with hotel-standard comfort. Alternatively take a train or bus to Wanzhou (about 3 hours) and board there.
