Everyone comes overland, and Lanzhou is where the trip starts. Lanzhou is the transport hub of the northwest: Zhongchuan Airport (LHW) is 74.5 km from the city with shuttle buses every hour from 06:00 (¥30, about 1 hour) and taxis at ¥150–180; Lanzhou railway station in Chengguan district is served by buses 114, 117, 118 and 12 and links the Longhai, Lanxin, Lanqing and Baolan lines. From Lanzhou, buses for Xiahe leave the South Bus Station (81 Langongping Road, tel 0931-2914066) four times a day at 07:30, 08:30, 14:00 and 15:00, about ¥18.5–50 depending on service, covering 258 km in 4 hours. There is no railway into Gannan at all — the road is the only way in.
Once you are in Gannan, a chartered car is the best way to travel, because public coaches do not reach many of the sights. You can fix a car in Lanzhou before you leave or arrange one in Xiahe, and drivers charge either by distance or by the day — bargain. Sangke Grassland is a ¥30 return charter from Xiahe, or ¥1 per person on the shared minibuses at Wangfu Square; the Xiahe–Bajiaocheng–Ganjia round trip is ¥100–130. Coaches connect the towns: Xiahe to Langmusi leaves at 07:40 (4 hours, ¥70), Langmusi to Xiahe at 14:00, Hezuo to Langmusi at 06:30, 07:20 and 12:00 (3 hours, ¥50), and Langmusi to Hezuo on the same times. Self-driving is not recommended without mountain-road experience — there are frequent rollovers, and yaks and sheep cross the road as if they own it.
