There is no railway in Kangding, so everyone arrives by air, road or on foot from Chengdu. Kangding Airport (KGT) sits on Zheduo Shan at 4,280 m — the second-highest commercial airport in the world, with pilots on oxygen masks for the landing. Flights from Chengdu Shuangliu run daily, 07:15–08:10, and return 08:55–09:45; Chongqing flights operate Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. There are no buses or official taxis at the airport, but an airport shuttle meets the flights and takes about an hour to town; the ticket office in town is on 0836-2871111 and the bus leaves around 06:00.
Buses are the standard route: from Chengdu's Xinnanmen tourist bus centre (028-85433609), Shiyang and Chengbei stations, ¥107–127, 7–8 hours over the Erlang Shan tunnel — the road is now good and the bends are manageable. From Luding, shared Santana taxis reach Kangding in an hour for ¥15 per person, leaving when four or five seats fill. Self-driving the 318 west from Chengdu takes about 5 hours; the alternative route via Wolong, Xiaojin (Siguniang Shan) and Danba is 504 km. Riders and hitchhikers use the same road — flag drivers with a big wave rather than a thumb, and expect competition in July and August.
Inside town, buses run two routes from 07:00 to 23:30, and taxis start at ¥3 for the first kilometre then ¥1.2 per km, so a trip across town rarely passes ¥5. Long-distance shared taxis for Tagong, Mugecuo and Luding gather at the car park opposite Changcheng Hotel and at the bridgehead on Yanhe East Road; ask at the bus station dispatch office for chartered cars.
