Lanzhou Tours & Private Day Tours 2026 | Yellow River, Zhongshan Bridge, Beef Noodles | JoyoTour

Lanzhou, Gansu's Yellow River capital, is where beef noodles were born. Two days cover the White Pagoda, the 1907 iron bridge and the Gansu Museum — the Silk Road gateway.

The short version

Lanzhou is worth 2 full days. It is the only provincial capital the Yellow River runs straight through, and the birthplace of the beef noodle that conquered China. The classic sights cost almost nothing: White Pagoda Park, the 1907 Zhongshan iron bridge, the Yellow River Mother sculpture and the Waterwheel Park are all free, and so is the Gansu Provincial Museum. Only Xinglong Mountain charges a fee, at ¥30. Come in early autumn for cool air and sweet melons; the Silk Road festival runs each September. High-speed trains reach Xining in 1 hour and Dunhuang by rail, which makes Lanzhou the natural first stop on a Gansu loop.

The place itself

What Lanzhou is actually like

Lanzhou is the city that surprises people who expected a dusty frontier town. The Yellow River cuts straight through the middle of it, a golden band between bare mountains north and south, and the whole city stretches thin along the valley. Stand on the 1907 iron bridge at dusk and the water below runs copper in the last light while the far bank lights up — this is not a place anyone expects to find romantic.

What not to miss — Lanzhou

01

Zhongshan Bridge

The 1907 iron bridge over the Yellow River, known as 'the first bridge of the Yellow River under heaven' and the oldest surviving bridge in Lanzhou. Built in 1907 as the Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge, it is free to walk and best at night when the whole span is lit.

02

White Pagoda Park

Climb the hill north of the river for the classic view down over the city and the iron bridge, with the Yuan-dynasty white pagoda at the top. Free, open 06:00–18:00; the Yellow River cable car runs up from beside the Waterwheel Park at ¥45 return (¥35 up, ¥25 down).

03

Gansu Provincial Museum

About 350,000 objects across palaeontology, painted pottery and Silk Road bronzes, with the Bronze Galloping Horse — the 'Flying Horse of Gansu' — as the prize exhibit. Free, 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00, closed Mondays; on Xijin West Road, bus to Qilihe Bridge.

04

Yellow River Mother sculpture

He E's sculpture of a mother and infant on the south bank, the most photographed piece of public art in the city. Free, on the middle stretch of Binhe Road by the north side of Little West Lake Park; walkable from Zhongshan Bridge or bus 26 to the Yellow River Mother stop.

05

Waterwheel Park

Recreates the rows of giant irrigation waterwheels that once lined both banks, built in 2005 on the south bank of the Binhe Road. Free, 08:00–18:00, open until 20:00 in summer; in winter the water level drops and the wheels may not turn.

06

Xinglong Mountain

The nearest national forest reserve to Lanzhou, 60 km out at Yuzhong, with two peaks split by the Xinglong gorge and a cloud bridge strung across it. ¥30, open 06:00–21:00; Gansu's only fully equipped alpine ski field sits here, good for beginners and intermediates.

Getting there and away

Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport sits at Zhongchuan in Yongdeng county, 70 km from the city and about an hour by road; it is a plateau airport at 1,947 m. Flights connect Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Guilin, Chengdu, Xi'an and Urumqi, plus Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok, Jeju and Seoul. The airport bus leaves from opposite the Jinjiang Sunny Hotel at ¥30 per person. A metered taxi would top ¥200, so agree a flat rate of ¥180–200, or share a red airport taxi for ¥40–100 per person depending on how many ride and where you sit. Lanzhou railway station handles over 100 routes, reaching Jiayuguan and Dunhuang within the province and Xining, Taiyuan, Yinchuan, Hohhot, Beijing, Urumqi, Xi'an, Qingdao, Jinan, Zhengzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lhasa, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Shenzhen beyond it. Long-distance buses leave from three stations: the South Station for Xiahe and Langmusi, the Passenger Centre opposite the railway station for Xi'an, Xining and Tianshui, and the East Station for Dunhuang and Jiayuguan.

How many days do you need?

Two days is the honest number. Day one walks the Yellow River line: White Pagoda Park in the morning, down across Zhongshan Bridge, the Yellow River Mother sculpture, a sheep-skin raft or the Waterwheel Park, lunch on beef noodles at Ma Zilu on Zhangye Road, then the West Gate Mosque and the Zhengning Road night market. Day two takes in the Gansu Provincial Museum, then Wuquan Mountain and the antique market in the old City God Temple. A third day buys Xinglong Mountain or Qingcheng Old Town, and many travellers simply use Lanzhou as the springboard west toward Xiahe, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Lanzhou?

Early autumn is the local answer — cool, dry air, sweet juicy melons in season and the annual Silk Road festival in September. Spring brings sandstorms, summer days are hot with a sharp drop after dark, and winter is cold and dry. Whatever the season, pack a jacket and lip balm: temperatures swing sharply and the air is dry.

Is Lanzhou worth visiting, or just a transit stop?

It is worth more than a transit stop, though it is often used as one. The city is small and the sights sit close together, so a single day covers White Pagoda Park, Zhongshan Bridge, the waterwheel park and beef noodles without rushing. Two days adds the Gansu Provincial Museum and Wuquan Mountain comfortably.

What is there to do in Lanzhou at night?

Zhengning Road night market is the main event — a long, brightly lit street of barbecue, malatang, milk-and-fermented-rice desserts and fruit, running every evening. Yongchang Road is the other favourite for snacks, clothes and trinkets. The iron bridge and the riverfront are lit up and worth a late walk, and the night-food stalls run until two or three in the morning.

How do I get to Lanzhou from Xi'an or Xining?

By high-speed rail: Xining is about 1 hour away and Xi'an around 3 hours, which makes Lanzhou an easy link on a Gansu–Qinghai loop. Regular trains also connect Jiayuguan and Dunhuang within the province. Long-distance buses are faster than trains on some routes but less safe, so rail is the usual choice.

Do I need to worry about altitude sickness in Lanzhou?

No — the city sits at about 1,520 m, which is not high enough to cause altitude sickness for most people. Only those in poor health need to take it slowly on arrival. The airport at 1,947 m is higher but you pass through it briefly.

What should I eat in Lanzhou besides beef noodles?

Grey peas (huidouzi), a sweet pea-and-jujube porridge served with sugar; jiangshui mian, a sour chilled noodle soup that is a summer staple; niunai jidan laozao, milk cooked with egg and fermented rice; sweet fermented oats (tianpeizi); liangpi cold noodles; and hand-grabbed lamb. Du Ji Sweet Foods on Dazhong Lane serves most of the classics under one roof.
