Wuyuan Tours & Private Tour Packages 2026 | Villages, Rapeseed, Jiangxi | JoyoTour

Wuyuan is Jiangxi's 'most beautiful countryside' — white-walled Huizhou villages among rapeseed terraces. Private Wuyuan tours and the East and North lines, from US$149 a day.

The short version

Wuyuan is a county of about 360,000 people in northeast Jiangxi, on the Anhui and Zhejiang borders, that China calls its 'most beautiful countryside' — dozens of white-walled, black-tiled Huizhou villages set among rice terraces and rapeseed fields. Give it 2 days for the East and North lines, 3 in late March or early April when the rapeseed blooms, or in November for autumn colour.

The place itself

What Wuyuan is actually like

Wuyuan sits where Jiangxi, Anhui and Zhejiang meet, and its villages are Huizhou villages — whitewashed walls, black-tiled roofs, horse-head gables — strung along streams and terraced into the hills. There are dozens of them, and they are the whole reason to come. The countryside here was once rich on Huizhou merchants' money and still carries the carved halls, ancestral temples and stone-flagged lanes they paid for.

For most of the year Wuyuan is a slow, quiet place of rice and tea. Then, for two weeks in late March and early April, the rapeseed flowers open and the whole county turns gold: terraces of it at Jiangling, village after village ringed by it. It is the single most photographed landscape in southern China. A second, quieter season comes in November, when the maples at Shicheng go red and the villagers at Huangling spread chillies, corn and persimmons on round bamboo trays to dry.

The villages are scattered and each is paid for separately or with a five-day pass, so Wuyuan is not a place you wander into — you plan it. The two main routes, East and North, run out from the county town of Ziyang, and the best of the county is often the road between the sights rather than the sights themselves.

It is genuinely rural: the food is Huizhou and spicy, the guesthouses are converted farmhouses, and the evenings are silent. If you want nightlife or polish, this is not the place — if you want to walk into a Chinese ink painting, it is.

What not to miss — Wuyuan

01

Jiangling's rapeseed terraces

The single best place in Wuyuan to see the rapeseed bloom, spread in golden terraces from the ridge down into the valley, with white-walled villages folded in among the yellow. Viewing platforms 1 and 2 are joined by a stone path.

02

Huangling, the sun-drying village

A mountainside village of 500 years where, each autumn, every window and rooftop carries round bamboo trays of drying chillies, corn and persimmons — the image on half of China's tourism posters. Reached by cable car and ticketed separately.

03

Likeng, the classic water village

A Li-surnamed village 12 km from the county town, threaded by a stream and crossed by little bridges — the 'small bridge, flowing water, family home' scene that defines Wuyuan. Long popular, so it is busier than some.

04

Xiaoqi, upper and lower

Two villages at the end of the East line, split into Lower Xiaoqi with its old camphor trees and busy lanes and Upper Xiaoqi, quieter, up a 1-km country path lined with rapeseed in spring.

05

Rainbow Bridge

A covered wooden bridge of 800 years, 140 m long with four piers, five spans and eleven pavilions, standing in the green water at Qinghua. One of China's oldest and longest gallery bridges.

06

Shicheng's autumn maples

A tiny walled hamlet in the north, famous for its red maples and dawn mist — the other classic Wuyuan photograph, and the reason photographers come in November.

Getting there and away

Wuyuan is now reached most easily by high-speed rail: Wuyuan Station sits on the Hefei–Fuzhou line, minutes from the county town. By air, the nearest airports are Shangrao Sanqingshan (SQD), Jingdezhen and Tunxi (Huangshan), all within a two-hour drive. It is also an easy drive from Huangshan in about two hours to the north, from Jingdezhen in 1.5 hours to the west and from Shangrao in 2 hours to the south. Road is a genuine pleasure here — much of the loveliest scenery is on the lanes between the villages.

Inside the county, village-to-village transport is by local minibus from the Wuyuan bus station: about ¥6 for short hops, ¥10 for the furthest villages, and they mostly run mid-morning and return early afternoon. This is the cheapest way but slow and infrequent; most visitors instead hire a car with a driver for about ¥300 a day, or a bigger minibus with a group for about ¥500. Bicycles rent for ¥20–30 a day, though the roads roll and climb.

How many days do you need?

Two days is the workable minimum, one for the East line and one for the North. Three days is better and lets you slow down, add the West line's Mandarin-duck lake or a side trip to Huangling, and be somewhere at dawn for the mist. If you are chasing the rapeseed, budget three days and stay in the villages at Jiangling or Xiaoqi so you can shoot the morning light without a pre-dawn drive.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

When do the rapeseed flowers bloom in Wuyuan?

Late March to early April is the window, with the exact peak moving a week either way by year. Jiangling has the biggest and most photographed terraces; the mild downside is that it is also the most crowded, so go at dawn and early in the week. Outside this fortnight Wuyuan is green, quiet and a fraction of the price.

Is Wuyuan worth visiting outside spring?

Yes — autumn is the second peak. In November the maples at Shicheng turn red and Huangling's villagers dry chillies, corn and persimmons on bamboo trays, giving you the other great Wuyuan image. Summer is green and wet, and winter is bare but atmospheric, with the old village festivals of New Year and Lantern Festival.

How do I get around Wuyuan's villages?

The villages are scattered across the county and linked by local minibuses that cost ¥6–10 and run mainly mid-morning. Because they are slow and thin on the ground, most visitors hire a car and driver for about ¥300 a day, which lets you chain villages together on your own schedule. Cycling works but the roads climb.

Do I need the Wuyuan village pass?

If you plan to see several villages, yes — the five-day pass is ¥210 and covers 14 of them, versus ¥60 for a single village. Note that Huangling is not included and needs its own ticket and cable car, and Jiangwan sells separately at ¥120. Activate the pass within three hours of buying it.

What should I eat in Wuyuan?

Huizhou cooking, done in a Wuyuan key: heavy on steaming and 'paste' dishes, and generally spicy. Order the lotus-leaf-braised red carp (bag-tied red carp), steamed pork with rice flour, 'paste tofu', steamed rice cake for breakfast, and sweet-and-sour goose neck. Wash it down with local rice wine.

What is the best thing to buy in Wuyuan?

The 'four colours of Wuyuan' — red (the pouched red carp), green (Wuyuan green tea), black (Longwei inkstones from the She inkstone family) and white (Jiangwan snow pears). Add oil-paper umbrellas from Jialu and dried mushrooms and bamboo shoots from the hills. Buy tea and inkstones in the villages, not the county-town shops.
