Zhoushan Tours & Private Tour Packages 2026 | Putuo Mountain, Zhujiajian, Dongji Islands | JoyoTour

Zhoushan is Zhejiang's archipelago city — 1,390 islands across 22,000 sq km of sea, home to Putuo Mountain, the Dongji isles and China's largest fishing port.

The short version

Zhoushan is China's archipelago city in Zhejiang, made of 1,390 islands, and 3 to 4 days covers the Buddhist island of Putuo Mountain, the sand and sculpture of Zhujiajian and a night of seafood at Shenjiamen. Putuo Mountain costs ¥160 in peak season and ¥140 in January and December; South Sand on Zhujiajian is ¥60; the island is reached by air via Putuoshan Airport or by road across more than 20 sea bridges, since Zhoushan has no railway at all.

The place itself

What Zhoushan is actually like

Zhoushan is not one island but 1,390 of them, scattered across 22,000 sq km of sea off Zhejiang's east coast. The city itself sits on the largest island, a long shape the locals say looks like a moored boat — 'zhou shan', the boat-shaped mountain. Cross-sea bridges tie the main islands back to the mainland, so you can drive out over the water, but the moment you step onto anything smaller you are back on a boat.

What Zhoushan sells is the sea itself: the Buddhist island of Putuo Mountain, the sand sculpture beaches of Zhujiajian, the swordsman's island of Taohua that Jin Yong put in his novels, and the far outer isles of Dongji and Shengsi where the water turns properly blue. It is a coastline culture rather than a city culture — fishing boats, incense smoke and night seafood stalls matter more here than temples and museums.

The food is the reason a lot of people come. Shenjiamen harbour is the largest natural fishing port in China, one of the world's three great fishing harbours, and the night market at the dock runs a mile of stalls cooking whatever came off the boats that day. Zhoushan beltfish, yellow croaker and swimming crab are the local claims to fame; the beltfish is often called the best-tasting in the world.

It is an easy, low-key destination by Chinese standards. Distances are short, prices are gentle, the air is cleaner than the mainland and English is thin but the signage on the main sights is not. Give it three or four days and go slow — the point of Zhoushan is to stop moving.

What not to miss — Zhoushan

01

Putuo Mountain

One of the four great Buddhist mountains of China and the island where Guanyin is said to hold her court, a wooded, incense-drifted island across from Zhujiajian. There are three great temples — Puji, Fayu and Huiji — plus the 18 m bronze Guanyin and the cave where the waves thunder. A joint ticket runs the whole island.

02

Zhujiajian and the sand sculpture beach

The fifth-largest island of the group, joined to the main island by bridge, and the birthplace of Chinese sand sculpture. South Sand is the biggest and best of its seven beaches; the International Sand Sculpture Art Square stages the annual festival and lets you carve your own.

03

Mount Daqing

At 378.6 m the highest point of Zhujiajian, reached by road up the north slope to a ridge between the Wusha and Wolf bays. The peak is wrapped in cloud much of the year — 'Daqing drunk on mist' is the local spectacle — and the stone formations number more than two hundred.

04

Shenjiamen fishing harbour

A 5 km natural harbour sheltered by two hills, the largest in China and one of the three great fishing ports of the world. By day it is masts and ropes; after dark the lights go on and the waterfront night market serves the catch straight off the boats.

05

The Dongji islands

The easternmost inhabited islands of China, 45 km out in the East China Sea — 28 islands and 108 reefs, reached by a single daily boat from Shenjiamen. Dongfu Mountain has the cliffs and the lighthouse; the water out here is the clean, deep blue the mainland coast never gets.

06

Taohua Island

The island Jin Yong invented as the home of Huang Yaoshi in 'The Legend of the Condor Heroes', and which he confirmed was modelled on Zhoushan's Taohua. A wuxia film set, a long beach at Tanwan, and Anqi Peak, the highest in the whole archipelago at 540 m.

Getting there and away

You fly, drive or ferry in — there is no train, and the cross-sea bridge is a road bridge only. Putuoshan Airport (HSN) sits on Zhujiajian just 1.2 km from Shenjiamen, with flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Qingdao, Nanjing and more, and only ten minutes by road to the Putuo Mountain ferry. By coach there are three main stations on the main island — Dinghai, Shenjiamen and Banshengdong — running to Shanghai (six coaches a day to Xujiahui and Taopu), Hangzhou and Ningbo (24 a day). Driving from Shanghai takes the Hangzhou Bay route down to Ningbo, then the sea bridge onto the island; expect the ferry queue at Baifeng to be long on peak days.

Getting around splits in two. On the main island and Zhujiajian, the Ding-Shen bus links Dinghai and Shenjiamen every half hour in about 40 minutes and the bridge buses reach the airport and the beaches; taxis flag at ¥8 for the first 2.5 km then ¥1.80 a km. Everything else is by sea. Yadanshan pier faces Ningbo's Baifeng with 43 sailings a day, 50 minutes and ¥15 a head; Dinghai port runs the longer overnight services to Shanghai; and from Shenjiamen's Banshengdong pier the fast boats fan out to Putuo Mountain, Taohua, Dongji and beyond. Boat timetables shift with weather and season, so always confirm the day before.

How many days do you need?

Three days is a fair minimum: one for Putuo Mountain, one for Zhujiajian's beaches and Mount Daqing, one for Shenjiamen's harbour and night market. Four adds the outer islands — Dongji or Shengsi — which are the trip's real reward if you have the time and the weather. Five or more turns it into a slow island-hopping holiday, and that is what Zhoushan is actually for.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Zhoushan?

June to October, when the beaches are warm and the sea is at its bluest — but that is also the typhoon season, so check the marine forecast before you commit to a boat. The shoulder months of May and October are the sweet spot: less rain, smaller crowds, still mild. Winter is quiet and the sea is grey, but there are almost no tourists.

Can I get to Zhoushan by train?

No. There is no railway on the islands and none planned on the cross-sea bridge, which is a road bridge only. You arrive by plane at Putuoshan Airport (HSN), by long-distance coach from Shanghai, Hangzhou or Ningbo, or by ferry; everything beyond the main island is by boat.

How much is Putuo Mountain?

It is ticketed by season: ¥140 a head in January and December, ¥160 from February to November, and ¥200 over the Spring Festival first five days and the May and October Golden Week dates. Students pay half; over-70s go free. The temple incense tickets are separate and small — ¥5 at Puji and Fayu, ¥6 at the Guanyin statue. Book ahead at the two biggest holidays.

Is Zhoushan worth going for the food alone?

Yes, and Shenjiamen is where to do it. The harbour is the largest natural fishing port in China and its waterfront night market runs the length of the dock cooking the day's catch; budget about ¥126 a head at the stalls, ¥124 at Gaojiazhuang (0580-3025777), which posts fixed prices so you will not be overcharged. Order the beltfish, the swimming crab and the local barnacles in August.

How do I reach the Dongji islands?

One boat a day from Shenjiamen's Banshengdong pier, out at 08:30 and back at 11:00, so plan to sleep on the islands. In the July–August weekends a second afternoon sailing is added, leaving at 13:30 and returning from Miaozihu at 16:00. Between Miaozihu, Qingbang and Dongfu there are two ferries a day, more at summer weekends.

Do I need to worry about typhoons?

In summer and early autumn, yes. Zhoushan sits in the typhoon belt and July to September brings tropical storms that can shut the ferries for a day or two; the winter months bring strong winds instead. Book flexible accommodation in the summer and always check the boat schedule the day before you plan to move islands.
