Hefei Tours & Private Tour Packages 2026 | Bao Zheng, Sanhe | JoyoTour

Hefei is Anhui's 2,000-year-old capital — the hometown of the model judge Bao Zheng, a moat-ringed garden city, and the high-speed rail gateway to Huangshan.

The short version

Hefei is the capital of Anhui and a 2,000-year-old city built at the meeting of two rivers — best known as the hometown of Bao Zheng, the incorruptible Song-dynasty judge whose black-faced statue still stands in his memorial shrine. Give it 2 days: the old-town sights and Bao's shrine on one, the water town of Sanhe or the forested Dashu Hill on the other. It is also the rail gateway to Huangshan and the Hui villages beyond.

The place itself

What Hefei is actually like

Hefei has been a regional capital for most of two thousand years, and for most of that time it has been a place you defended rather than a place you visited: a river junction behind a ring of water, guarding the road from the north China plain down into the Yangtze delta. The old city still shows it — a moat-turned-park loops the centre, and the sights cluster inside it.

Its name is a description, not a label: 'Hefei' means the meeting of the Fei waters, where the eastern and southern branches of the Fei River converge. That water gave the city its greenery — Hefei likes to call itself a garden city, and with the Huancheng park ribbon and two forested hills on the outskirts, it more or less is.

What puts Hefei on the map for Chinese visitors is two men from opposite ends of its history. Bao Zheng, the Song-dynasty official who became the nation's symbol of an honest judge, was born just outside the city and is buried here; Li Hongzhang, the late-Qing statesman who founded the Beiyang Fleet, built his family mansion on what is now the main shopping street. Between them they anchor the whole old town.

And it is a gateway. Lake Chao, one of China's five largest freshwater lakes, lies on the southern edge of the city; the water town of Sanhe is a short drive out; and the high-speed rail line to Huangshan puts the Yellow Mountains and the Hui villages of Hongcun and Xidi about an hour and a half away.

What not to miss — Hefei

01

Bao Zheng Memorial Shrine

The shrine of Bao Zheng — Bao Gong — the Song-dynasty official remembered as China's model of an incorruptible judge. It sits on a small island in the Baohe park ring, a walled courtyard of white walls and grey tiles around a hall holding his seated statue. Free to approach, ¥20 inside.

02

Li Hongzhang's Residence

The family mansion of the late-Qing statesman who founded China's modern navy, mid-way along the Huaihe Road pedestrian street and the largest surviving notable's house in the city. Its halls now hold a life-of-Li exhibition and a look at the Huai Army clique he led.

03

Xiaoyaojin Park

A free, water-and-green city park on the site of the 215 AD battle in which the Wei general Zhang Liao routed Sun Quan's forces with a much smaller army. Today it is mostly a lake, a boat pavilion and broad lawns — Hefei's favourite place to do nothing.

04

Sanhe Ancient Town

A 2,500-year-old water town 40 km southwest where three rivers meet, with the classic 'eight old things' — old street, old bridge, old wharf, old tea houses and more. More working village than theme park, and best in the early morning.

05

Dashu Hill and the forest parks

An isolated 284-metre hill 10 km from the centre, ringed by a forest park, a botanical garden and a wildlife park. The city's go-to escape for a half day of actual countryside.

06

Anhui Museum

The provincial museum, strong on Shang and Zhou bronzes, Chu-state currency, Han relief stones and Huizhou carving — the best single primer on Anhui before you head out to the Hui villages.

Getting there and away

Hefei Xinqiao International Airport (HFE) is about 30 km northwest of the city, linked by airport buses and a fast road in roughly 40 minutes; there is also a rail link to Hefei South. By train, Hefei is one of the great hubs of the Yangtze delta: Hefei South station connects to Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan and Beijing on high-speed lines, and to Huangshan in about 90 minutes.

In town, bus routes run at ¥1–2 and cover every main sight, a metro system threads the centre, and BRT lines run along the main boulevards. Taxis start at around ¥6, though hailing one at rush hour can be slow. For Sanhe, a car or a public minibus from the tourist bus station is the practical choice.

How many days do you need?

Two days is enough for the essentials: day one for Bao Zheng's shrine, Li Hongzhang's mansion and Xiaoyaojin inside the old-town ring, day two for Sanhe or Dashu Hill and the Anhui Museum. A third day lets you slow down — the botanical and wildlife parks, more of the food streets — and a fourth turns Hefei into the start of a Huangshan and Hongcun trip, since the mountains are only 90 minutes away by rail.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Hefei?

Two days for the city, and a third if you want Sanhe, Dashu Hill and the museums without rushing. Many people use Hefei as a one-night stop on the way to Huangshan and the Hui villages, which are about 90 minutes away by high-speed rail.

What is the best time to visit Hefei?

April to October, with spring and autumn the best of it. Summer is hot and wet — the plum-rain season dumps most of the year's water in May and June — and winter is cold but dry, around 0–8°C (32–46°F), with a fair amount of clear sun.

Is Hefei worth visiting?

Yes, with the right expectations. It is not a showpiece ancient capital, but it has a genuine old-town core — Bao Zheng's shrine, Li Hongzhang's mansion, the moat parks — a strong regional kitchen, and one of China's better provincial museums. And it is the natural first stop before Huangshan and Hongcun.

What should I eat in Hefei?

Hefei's Anhui kitchen is heavier and more savoury than the seafood-led cooking of the coast. Try Cao Cao chicken, Li Hongzhang's hodgepodge (a mixed braise of whatever the kitchen has), braised Baohe carp, Sanhe rice dumplings and Luzhou roast duck. In summer, the city goes mad for crayfish, especially along Ningguo Road.

What is there to do around Hefei?

Sanhe Ancient Town, a 40 km water town with old streets, bridges and wharves; Dashu Hill with its forest, botanic and wildlife parks; and Lake Chao, one of China's five largest freshwater lakes, on the city's southern edge. Farther out, Huangshan and the Hui villages are a rail ride away.

How do I get around Hefei without Chinese?

Easily enough. Buses are cheap and cover the sights, the metro is bilingual and expanding, and taxis are metered and cheap. English is thin outside hotels, so keep a translation app handy and have your destination written in Chinese. Ride-hailing apps work well.
