Huangguoshu Tours & Private Day Tours 2026 | Huangguoshu Waterfall, Tianxingqiao, Doupotang & Tunpu Villages

Huangguoshu, Guizhou is Asia's biggest waterfall — 77.8 m high, 101 m wide, the only one you can walk behind. Two days cover the falls, Tianxingqiao and the Tunpu villages.

The short version

Huangguoshu is worth 2 days. The main waterfall is 77.8 m high and 101 m wide — the third-largest in the world, and the only one you can walk behind, through the Water Curtain Cave — and it comes with two more falls plus the stone-forest scenery of Tianxingqiao on the same ticket: ¥180 in high season, ¥160 from December to February. Come June to October, when the river is in flood and the falls are at full roar; winter shrinks them to a trickle. Base yourself in Anshun, 45 km (28 mi) away, or day-trip from Guiyang, 128 km and about 2 hours by highway.

The place itself

What Huangguoshu is actually like

Almost every Chinese schoolchild has met Huangguoshu before they ever see it: the waterfall appears in four different editions of the national primary-school language textbook. So people arrive already knowing the name, which is a strange way to meet a waterfall — and then the noise hits you before the water does. The viewing platform is set back from the gorge, and the sound arrives first, a low continuous thunder that gets into your chest.

What makes it more than a single photograph is the geology. This is karst country, and the river has cut a deep box canyon through limestone; the main fall drops 77.8 m into Xiniu Pool, then the water runs on through a chain of step pools and lesser falls. Behind the main curtain the rock has been hollowed into a cave with six openings, so you can stand inside the falling water and look out at the gorge through a moving sheet of white.

Around it all sit the villages of the Bouyei and Miao, and the 600-year-old Tunpu settlements of Han Chinese descended from Ming dynasty garrison troops. The stone-walled villages, the wood-and-lacquer opera masks of Dixi theatre, and the batik workshops of Shitou Zhai are what turn a waterfall stop into a two-day trip.

What not to miss — Huangguoshu

01

Huangguoshu Waterfall

The headline act: 77.8 m high and 101 m wide, the third-largest waterfall in the world after Niagara and Victoria, and the only one anywhere you can view from above, below, front, back, left and right. You hear it long before you see it. The free alternative to the escalator is to walk down — the descent is easy, the climb back is the workout.

02

Water Curtain Cave

Hollowed through the middle of the main fall, this cave has six windows, five chambers, three springs and six passages, with names like the Hanging Cactus and the Water-Touching Terrace. Standing behind the curtain, the gorge opposite dissolves into green and white. The double rainbow over Xiniu Pool, seen from the cave windows, is the shot everyone wants.

03

Tianxingqiao Stone Forest

The soft counterpoint to the big fall: a stone-forest garden where water, rock and roots braid together. The famous stretch is the 'Birthday Stones' — a path of stepping stones each carved with a date, so you can find your own birthday and stand on it. Come early; this section jams solid by mid-morning.

04

Silver Chain Falling into Pool

A 10 m fall shaped like a funnel, its rim studded with raised stone bosses like upturned lotus leaves. The water spreads evenly across each leaf and slides off in thousands of silver threads. It is the most delicate waterfall in the group — and the one group tours skip, since they stop at Tianxing Lake.

05

Doupotang Waterfall

105 m across the crest and 21 m high, the widest-topped fall in the Huangguoshu group, and the one the Journey to the West pilgrims walked over in the TV series. Before a flood it emits a low rumbling roar, which is why locals call it the Howling Fall. The pool below is full of waterfowl that pose shamelessly for cameras.

06

Tunpu Villages and Dixi Opera

Six hundred years ago Ming troops from Jiangsu and Zhejiang were garrisoned here and never went home. Their descendants still wear Ming-style wide-sleeved robes and perform Dixi — 'the living fossil of Chinese opera' — masked, in seven- and ten-character verse, to a single gong and drum. Tianlong Tunpu is the easiest to reach; Yunfeng Bazhai is less commercialised.

Getting there and away

There is no railway station at Huangguoshu itself. Most visitors come through Guiyang or Anshun. From Guiyang Longdongbao Airport, bus 216 or the airport shuttle (¥5) reaches the railway station, then bus 60 or 29 (¥2) continues to Jinyang long-distance bus station; a taxi to Jinyang is about ¥70. Direct coaches run Jinyang to Huangguoshu from 08:00 to 12:45, roughly every half hour in high season, about 2.5 hours for ¥55. Alternatively take the airport shuttle straight to Anshun (¥60), cross the road to the south bus station, and pick up the Anshun–Huangguoshu express (¥20) to the Huangguoshu New Town ticket centre.

By rail, frequent trains link Guiyang and Anshun in about 1 hour 10 minutes for ¥15.5, and from Anshun railway station there are buses to the falls all day. Anshun South bus station runs to Huangguoshu 07:00–19:00 every 20 minutes for ¥20; Anshun West station runs passing services 07:40–18:00 roughly every half hour for ¥13. Anshun Huangguoshu Airport (AVA) is 45 km from the falls and 6 km from Anshun city, with flights from Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Kunming and Jinan — but summer discounts are rare, so book when the price looks acceptable rather than waiting. Once inside the park the three scenic areas are far apart and you need the shuttle bus or a car; the ¥50 unlimited bus pass suits solo travellers, while groups of three or more will find a chartered taxi at around ¥200 a day better value. Taxis in Anshun start at ¥4–6 for the first 3 km depending on model, then ¥1.4 per km, with a ¥10 flag fall between midnight and 07:00.

How many days do you need?

One full day is the honest minimum and covers the three scenic areas — Tianxingqiao, the main waterfall and Doupotang — in that order, which is also the order that dodges the worst of the crowds. Two days is better: add either the Tunpu villages (Tianlong for convenience, Yunfeng Bazhai for authenticity) or the Longgong karst cave, which you tour 1,260 m of by boat and which is the only 5A-rated cave scenery in the province. A third day buys Shitou Zhai, the batik village, and the Red Cliff inscriptions, but most travellers stop at two.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Huangguoshu?

June to October, when the summer rains fill the river and the falls run at full volume — this is the dramatic, thundering version of Huangguoshu. Winter is the dry season: the water drops sharply, Silver Chain Falling into Pool shrinks to almost nothing, and the falls become a much quieter, thinner thing. Spring and autumn are the compromise, with decent water and far fewer people.

Is Huangguoshu worth visiting in winter?

Only if you are already in Guizhou. The low-season ticket drops to ¥160 and the crowds vanish, but the main fall loses most of its power and the Silver Chain waterfall is not worth the walk. The surrounding Tunpu villages and Longgong cave are unaffected by water levels, which is what makes a winter trip still work.

Can you walk behind Huangguoshu Waterfall?

Yes — the Water Curtain Cave runs through the rock behind the main curtain, with six windows looking out through the falling water. You get misted rather than soaked, so a disposable raincoat is unnecessary; a plastic bag or dry pouch for your camera is the thing that actually matters. Watch your footing, the path is wet.

Do I need to book Huangguoshu tickets in advance?

In high season (July, August and the October national holiday) yes — buy online a few days ahead, as daily visitor caps apply and the ticket hall queues are long. Outside those windows you can generally buy at the gate. The ticket covers all three scenic areas for the day, so keep it with you.

Should I join a tour or go independently?

Independent travel gives you the full park — group tours usually stop at Tianxing Lake and never reach the Silver Chain waterfall or Tianxing Cave, which is a real loss. On the other hand, the three scenic areas are spread out and public transport between them is thin, so a private car or the ¥50 park shuttle is close to essential. A private day tour from Guiyang solves the logistics without cutting the itinerary short.

How do I get from Guiyang to Huangguoshu?

The simplest route is a direct coach from Guiyang Jinyang bus station, 08:00–12:45, roughly every half hour in high season, about 2.5 hours for ¥55. By train, take a Guiyang–Anshun service (about 1 hour 10 minutes, ¥15.5) and then the Anshun South or West station bus to the falls (¥20 or ¥13). Driving the expressway takes about 2 hours with ¥20 in tolls.
